THE SCANDINAVIAN GOLD CUP

RULES GOVERNING THE PRIZE OF THE SCANDINAVIAN YACHT
RACING UNION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL 5.5 METRE CLASS
Article 1
1.1. Origine
The Scandinavian Gold Cup is a permanent International Challenge Prize, presented to the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union in 1922 by Nyländska Jaktklubben, Helsingfors (Helsinki), Finland
1.2. Competitors
The Cup may be competed for annually by yachts of the International Sailing Federation's 5.5 Metre Class, registered with recognised yacht clubs.
1.3. Challengers
One challenge only will be accepted from each country and with one yacht only, entered by the National Authority of the respective country.
Article 2
2.1. Next competition
The club which wins the Cup shall have the right to arrange the competition the following year. If, however, the Cup has been won for two consecutive years by countries outside Europe, the next series of races shall be sailed in Europe as designated by the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union.
2.2. Transfer of rights
The club which has won may transfer the right to another recognised club in the same country, or ask the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union to designate the National Authority under whose auspices the next races are
Article 3
3.1. Notice of Race
A "Notice of Race" in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing shall be distributed by the organising club four month before the first race to the International 5.5 Metre Class Association and to all National Authorities having registered 5.5Metre yachts.
3.2. Challenges
Challenges are to be delivered by the National Authorities to the organising
club at least 30 days before the first race.
3.3. Entries
The final entries are to be delivered to the organising club at least 7 days before the first race. Entries shall specify the following:

1. Name of yacht
2. Sail letters and numbers
3. Name of owner, helmsman and crew
4. Name of yacht club
3.4. Certificate of Rating
The entry shall be accompanied by a valid Certificate of Rating.
Article 4
4.1. Eligibility
Every member of the crew of a competing yacht shall be an amateur as defined by the International Sailing Federation. The helmsman and at least one other member of the crew shall be nationals or residents of the challenging country.
Article 5
5.1. Rules
The races shall be governed by the International Sailing Federations Racing Rules, the rules of the International 5.5 Metre Class, the Notice of Race, the sailing instructions and these rules.
5.2. Jury
An International Jury, as defined by the Racing Rules of Sailing shall have overall supervision of the conduct of the event and shall hear and decide all protests.
Article 6
6.1. Course
The course shall be of the "Banana"-type. Each leg about 2.1 nautical miles. The first leg to be laid in the direction of the wind. Three legs are to be sailed against the wind and three legs downwind. The start shall be against the wind and the finish after the last downwind leg
6.2. Exceptions
If the conditions do not allow legs of 2.1nm, these may be reduced to 1.5nm. If it is still not possible to reach the minimum length, two additional legs may be added to the course.
6.3. Minimum length
The minimum total length of the course is to be 9.0 nm. The course must not be shortened.
Article 7
7.1. Time limit
There shall be a time limit of 3 1/2 hours for the leading yacht in each race.
Article 8
8.1. Races
The races shall be sailed on consecutive days, one race on each day. Exceptions hereto may be granted with the consent of three ore more officers of the class or the International Jury. After three races a yacht which has not won a race shall no longer compete.
8.2. Winner
The yacht which first wins three races shall be declared the winner.
Article 9
9.1. Measurement
Before the first race, the rating of the entered yachts must be verified be measurement at the place where the races are to be held.
Article 10
10.1. Cancelling
If only one yacht arrives for the competition, the race will be cancelled.
Article 11
11.1. Cup
The Cup is to be handed over into the care of the winning club and a record of the winning yacht, club, owner and crew shall be made in the Record Book accompanying the Cup. No inscriptions are to be made on the Cup itself.
11.2. Responsability
The winning club undertakes to place the Cup at the disposal of the organising club for the competition of the following year.
11.3. Record Books
All Record Books but not the last one were given to the archives of the Nyländska Jaktklubben (in 1995 to Mr Fred Ehrström of NJK on receipt).
Article 12
12.1. Remembrance Prize
The club which arranges the competition shall present to the helmsman of the winning yacht a cup in remembrance of its victory.
Article 13
13.1. Interpretations
Questions concerning the interpretation of these Rules shall be referred to
the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union.
Article 14
14.1. Alterations
Alterations to or deviations from these Rules are to be decided by the annual meeting of the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union.
